Shame. RIP.

He was mates with Podgy/George wasn't he? Sad couple of years for that group of friends.

I'm sure the lad will get a canny send off.

Gary will undoubtedly be known to football fans outside the NE as well.

Played with him for Sunderland Boys. Best player I played with or against. RIP Bert.
Saw him play for SAFC youths in his prime away at Huddersfield town on the pitches across the road from Leeds Road.

He ran the show.

didnt really know him but rememeber being on the same bus as him back from Carlisle in the cup a few years ago, and the coppers waiting for our bus at washington services on the way back, boarded the bus and frogmarched him off !

RIP fella

There will be hindereds of story's of when he was upto no good but there will be more when he was just an ordinary lad being a good mate to so many. As this is the football bit on here, he could have been up there with the best of his generation, he went off to sign schoolboy forms at Watford who had a fantastic set up back then. If he hadn't took the path he did in those early days he would in my opinion have been up there with the best. I think the draw of Sunderland and his lass at the time were very strong, topped off with other issues lead him back up the m1.
He was a big character with a big circle of good mates. There will be a big hole in SR6

He was a cracking player, I was in the Army with his brother and one or two others from down that way. Went to school with his lass and still see her from time to time sown the East End.

RIP Gazza Breeds.

Sad news, I'd never met him but my mate Turnsy (Bandit1973 on here who passed away back in 2006) used to tell me all the stories about when he was at Lilleshall, I think Turnsy's Dad may have even taught him at school? A true Sunderland lad!

very sad - played with him from 10-11 yr old through most levels and for many years. Im not sure he had too many regrets about the path he took - all this "he could have been this and that" is bollox imo. Smashing fella and loved by many and that's all that important. RIP Bert lad.

Awful news - only saw him a few weeks ago.
Never realised he was quite such a talented footballer, certainly never went on about it
Rip mate
