Anyone got any experience of cross bikes? Thinking of pick one up for winter this year. I've always went back to MTB or commuting for the winter but totally fell out with MTB now and fancy one of these, are they suitable for winter riding etc etc not to fussed about spec as it will basically just be used winter only reverting back to the roadie when the weather suits.

I got a Genesis Croix de Fer at Xmas time last year and absolutely love it. It's got disc brakes, steel frame and felt bombproof right throughout the very wet winter we had. Lots of times I wouldn't have gone out on any other bike that I've ever owned but had great rides on the CdF.

It's also v adaptable and I did a fairly big tour in Spain & France with a rack & panniers on the back. Probably a little heavy for full on CX racing but I'm planning to dip my toe in the water come autumn. Be a great commuting bike.

good innings for a pro cyclist that mind

Puts the pre C2C in a Day preparation to shame from both years!! Although I think Percy could give it a go. ;)

Chapeau to JTL if he really did down that lot and ride the World Champs two days later.........it may be just the challenge that Wiggo has been seeking.

I bought one last year on our lasses cycle to work scheme.Cannondale Caad x.Though is is slightly to big for me,i love it.I used it all through last years x season. It and me got covered in mud many times. It a smashing all purpose winter bike for me.Am currently doing most of my training on it,and have a race tomorrow night at Hetton Lyons.Come along and try it.You can use a mtb as well.NECCL muddy brown events. Its a summer warm up series of 4 races, for the season proper starting in 3 weeks. All categaries and abilities take part.

Thanks for the invite it sounds great but I doubt I will be doing any racing/events on it just commuting I probably will have to pick one up from Evans or Halfords on the ride to work scheme I like the look of the cannondale Cannondale CAADX 7 Sora 2014 Cyclocross Bike & the Boardman http://www.halfords.com/cycling/bikes/road-bikes/boardman-cx-team-bike-2014 Not too fussed on spending over a 1k on it as its winter only bike plus saving up to upgrade the road bike for next summer.

70 on the mtb is impressive. I was out early this morning and there were quite a few out but maybe less than normal. You're a masochist, you need a road bike ;)

You're not wrong. I did 110 on it today and my arse feels like it's had 20 lashes. Getting back in the saddle after the Shields ferry was excruciating.

Anyway, I'm not a lycra lover so the road bike is out of the question. Maybe I need to give the hybrid a bit of TLC.

On another front, can anyone recommend some decent cycling underwear?

Evans have a sale on ATM clothing and accessories dependant on your shoe size there are some decently priced shoes available online.

Just found out you can now redeem Halfords Ride to work vouchers at numerous stores online included. This cyclocross bike hunt is now going to be enjoyable some decent bikes out there.

I’m after some advice, my work has just joined the cycle to work scheme and I’m looking to get into road cycling. Been using a hybrid now for a few years and fancy making the jump to the road. I’ve never done any serious riding mainly but want to change that. 2main contenders are a Carbon framed ribble which I will upgrade the gears http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/bbd/r...do?part=BB14RIBGRANFONDO&sub=conf_BBRC&bike=1

The ribble will take up the full budget even with the 10% off or a Giant Defy http://www.rutlandcycling.com/281112/products/giant-defy-1-compact-road-bike-2014-black-red.aspx

Does anyone know of any beginner cycle clubs or anything in the Sunderland area to get into this a little more?

Ditto. Bought a CAADX 105 last winter, and love it. Not specifically to do cross racing, though I fancy a try some time, but more as a general winter/do it all/on-road/off-road track bike. Works really well for that.

You should try it.Season is just about to start. It can be a bit muddy at times, but i was racing in Hetton last night and conditions were perfect.Had a wonderfull ride. That bike must be the newer model. Mine does'nt have disc brakes.Mrs R is after a cross bike with disc brakes. She will use it for commuting and cross racing.

Sunderland clarion. If you do FB they have a group page.I've just started doing club rides with them with a view to joining the club.I'm in the same position as you. They seem a friendly bunch. They do Sat and Sun club rides, and also early morning rides.
