Certainly not the first Asian plane to crash in bad weather. There've been plenty of cases of pilots in China, Taiwan and Korea crashing in bad conditions rather than lose face by aborting the landing.

Seems that the plane was an MD83 that had just been leased to Air Algerie and is operated by Spanish airline Swiftair.
