compression packaging cubes

From a travel website:

"We went to Sicily last year with only one rucksack. It was quite easy to pack enough clothes and essentials. You buy yourselves compression packaging cubes for clothes and miniature toiletries, perfumes etc. And voilà you have your hand luggage."

Has anyone ever tried these? What's the difference between this and just squashing your clothes into a normal suitcase as best you can?

Please no replies saying "a week away, it was easy, just wore the same T-shirt and boxers for a week" ,etc etc

Never used them, half expected them to be those vacuum packs you can get but it's just a double zipped bag.

I suspect the difference between them and squashing your stuff into a suitcase is that they should expand once squashed, if you push down on your stuff in an open case you won't get it closed and zipped up before it tries to rebound.

Gimmick and a bit pointless imo.

Nothing other than it is more organised but you then have the additional luggage of all the packing cubes.
