No. He allowed the club to spend the money that had been sitting around doing fuck all for the last year. He didn't write a cheque from his own account, he didn't find it lying between the cushions of the setee. He permitted the club to spend it's own money, nothing more.
Its own money? The club owes him a couple of hundred million. It was his cash he spent.

Well in general it does. In that case, why do clubs spend money at all and why are you getting angry about absolutely nothing?
I'm not angry, that was me being aghast.

Clubs spend because they are Muppets, driven in by supporters who are muppets, demanding the clubs spend.

If spending really did usually improve the team we'd have seen a significant improvement in English clubs year on year for 20 odd year. It hasn't happened. Most signings don't work out.

By that rationale, every penny Sunderland spend is funded by Short? It's Short's cash Sunderland are spending? Is this how it works?

From the outside looking in i dont see how Ashley is responsible for your bad start (early days, like ourselves) this season. Recruitment seems to be in question from a pretty impressive warchest.

Around 50m quid net?

He's not, indirectly. The players and manager are grossly under-performing and are primarily responsible for the poor start which will continue. Money was made available and spent and the result is 2 points from 18 which is soon to become 2 points from 24. The reasons for this malaise are varied but most are related to signing the wrong players for the wrong reasons, they don't sign a player to do a job on the park they sign a player with the intention of making a profit within 2 years, the needs of the team are largely irrelevant. Money talks and you reap what you sow. The culture of "that'll do" courses through the corpse of the club that used to exist. Anything other than utter f***ing pigshit is just about good enough and that's Ashley's culture to a tee.

But he spent double figure millions on 3(?) Players and less on a couple of others didnt he? They aren't "that'll do" or "future profit" signings. They should be next step players. Not Ashleys fault if they dont work out. Neither is it that they decided Colo or Taylor were worthy centre halfs.
Still early days anyway imo.

He sanctioned the spending, that's the absolute limit of praise that fat cunt's getting from me.

He didn't choose the players, he doesn't coach them and he doesn't make any decisions during the course of the game which is why McClaren, Cathro and Carr must take a bit of responsibility and blame. Money was made available and they went big on 4 players...who have largely disappointed thus far. They're not off the hook and need to answer some serious questions as to the nature of this horrific start to the season. It's early days as you say but the omens aren't great so far.

You said they would be midtable and don't need to sign anyone for ages.

You said it with total confidence too. "they will finish midtable."

All of a sudden people on here, Mags & pundits alike were happily trotting out that phrase as a given.

The fee paid for Thauvin was 'proof' that he was top class and that Newcastle were leavig us behind ........ that worked out well ;)

That's all an owner can do. How come Graham Carr gets no stick? He has wasted an absolute fortune over years and years now.

Yes!
