Migrants trying to get here from Calais

I'm genuinely puzzled why. What do they think is here that's not in say France or Germany. Have they heard it's the land of milk and honey? Is it family? Do refugees genuinely get more here than elsewhere in Europe? Do they know they can get illegal work. Why would they risk their lives or be so desperate to get here? Genuine question. It's not an attempt to start political arguing.

Easier life. Some twats here wouldn't work with a jumpstart. Migrants will do jobs scatters deem "below them". Maybe something to do with our fucked up benefit system too.

they are kept whilst applications/appeals are processed.

Pretty accurate.
Ones wanting to get work can get work because there are plenty of vacancies.
Those not wanting to work can get decent benefits.
The criminally minded know they are pretty untouchable as the police and other agencies are terrified of being labelled racist.

Wrong, whilst being processed they get free accommodation, free utilities, free council tax and can use the NHS and schools. They also get a weekly cash allowance.

Just saw a report on this on CNN, focussing on 'The Jungle' campsite in Calais, and these 'poor refugees' fleeing from Syria, Afghanistan etc.

But surely they're free from persecution, ISIS etc in France, why the desperation to jump a train or lorry to England? What's so good about us over France? Are we that soft of a touch? Several of those interviewed couldn't speak English which I would imagine would limit their employability even if they do make it here.

exactly right - they destroy all their papers claim asylum, claim they are from some war torn country - get cared for whilst our authorities try to establish exactly who they are. They be here for years all on benefits

my GF (no) works in the county council and she says we have a major problem with migrants turning up - no papers or id - all claiming to be under 18 - every council has a duty of care to all children and they are immediately taken into care until its established who they are which is nearly impossible

they know exactly how to play the system theyve been briefed by the traffickers and other migrants etc

This thread is about the trouble in Calais. The people trying to get to the UK are wanting to claim asylum in the UK. They are non-EU asylum seekers, not migrant workers from the EU.

You are wrong, if the people in Calais manage to get to the UK they receive financial help, including cash in hand, a free house, free utilities and use of the NHS and schooling.
