Private Plates

Normally for people who want to hide the age of their car.
That's definitely a reason people use but it doesn't really wash does it? If your car is a current model but made a few years ago you might get away with its age being ambiguous, but surely if you have a current model and it's actually new then you won't be trying to hide its age, so all you actually achieve with the personalised plate is pointing out that your car probably isn't actually brand new.

And more to the point, who cares if someone else's car is 5 years old instead of being brand new? I'm perfectly happy with the age of my car being obvious to anyone who wants to work it out. I've had new cars and it's a nice experience because it's something new and possibly better than the last one, but not for some spurious oneupmanship. Most new cars are PCP or leased anyway so it's hardly a big deal to show off where you are in the leasing cycle to the apparently green-eyed neighbours.
