Whatever Happened To... Fernando Torres?

I remember Torres being the major difference between us and Liverpool when we played them at home in the 08/09 season, capitalising on a minor mistake by Nosworthy to smash one into the bottom corner from about twenty yards. He was fast, he was strong, he was one of the best strikers in the world.

What the fuck happened to the lad?

Injuries ruined his career. He's clearly still playing with no belief anymore, I know he's still earning £100k+ a week but I do feel sorry for him a bit, he was such a good player and now he's just average, that must be so frustrating.

Liverpool was built around him had Gerrard and Alonso in their prime picking him out

He was crocked ... Rushed back ... Confidence was shot

Went to Chelsea and was second fiddle to Drogba

His main asset was pace, injuries have taken that from him. Then you also have to look at the set ups he was in. Liverpool were ideal as he played on the last man and the likes if Gerrard would look to play it in behind at the first opportunity. Chelsea play much more patient football and play in front of back fours more. Oh and his confidence is absolutely shredded.

Similar to the way it started and ended for Owen.

Agreed on the pace bit. Reminds me of Owen - he was never the same once he lost that extra pace he had.

He was the ace in the pack at Liverpool, second fiddle to Drogba at Chelsea & spent his whole time sulking.

16 goals in 100 odd games for Chelsea

That's the same record Murphy had for us

Can you hear the drums Fernando?
I remember long ago another starry night like this
In the firelight Fernando
You were humming to yourself and softly strumming your guitar
I could hear the distant drums
And sounds of bugle calls were coming from afar

They were closer now Fernando
Every hour every minute seemed to last eternally
I was so afraid Fernando
We were young and full of life and none of us prepared to die
And I'm not ashamed to say
The roar of guns and cannons almost made me cry

There was something in the air that night
The stars were bright, Fernando
They were shining there for you and me
For liberty, Fernando
Though we never thought that we could lose
There's no regret
If I had to do the same again
I would, my friend, Fernando

Now we're old and grey Fernando
And since many years I haven't seen a rifle in your hand
Can you hear the drums Fernando?
Do you still recall the fateful night we crossed the Rio Grande?
I can see it in your eyes
How proud you were to fight for freedom in this land

There was something in the air that night
The stars were bright, Fernando
They were shining there for you and me
For liberty, Fernando
Though we never thought that we could lose
There's no regret
If I had to do the same again
I would, my friend, Fernando

Yes, if I had to do the same again
I would, my friend, Fernando...

wouldn't mind him playing for us like

True. It's so weird seeing him play nowadays, just a shadow of what he used to be. Sounds daft but he even runs with the ball differently now, like he hasn't got it under control. I was watching a video of him scoring for Liverpool the other week, he was the best striker in the world at the time IMO.
