its a puzzle like, plus the relative lightness of the stone, almost like its coal/carbon. it just caught my attention when we were down there the other day so I picked it up. might be nowt tbh but it just looks like it possibly could be something

The other one looks like crushed plant material from a coal measure.
A prehistoric plant or something that got mixed in when they were digging it up ?

Coal is made from compressed plant material. The pure black stuff is 100% plant material, formed in stagnant bogs. If the plant was deposited in a sedimentary area, it would end up mixed with silt which would compress to stone. I've got a glycopteris from Easington pit in the same colour rock as that.

Nailed on then. Its either colliery waste or been washed up from an exposed coal measure. Crack it open with a cold chisel, bet its full of leafy stuff.
