Homebrewing - Part 3

Are you a regular at a pub? If yes, ask them for bottles.
I could probably get them from a pub I used to go in a lot but I suspect they'd be able to get me loads of 330ml bottles but I'm really after 500ml. No harm in asking mind.

I've just been having a read through this thread from the start and being new to all this I couldn't understand half the fucker!

What's a PB and a TC? Also, what's the purpose of a racking vessel? What's the benefit over going straight to the bottle?

Going to make the all grain porter over the weekend so might hoy a few pictures up showing the inevitable mess I'll be making.

Still nobody stepped forward as doing all grain yet, surely one of the piss heads on this thread does it?

Got a juicer today, tree at work is laden with apples. Scrumpy is crying out to be made.
How many apples do you think you would use, marra? I have a juicer and an apple tree in my back garden. Think I'll give this a go with a 5l demi. Would it just be apple juice, warm water, sugar and yeast? How much sugar would you recommend for 5l?

Mainly for wine, mate. Helps get rid of some of the crap at the bottom so that you get a clearer wine.

Christ this has been a long and boozy summer.
That stupid brewing shed will be the death of me.
Leading up to the World Cup I was brewing 80-120 pints a week most weeks to keep the stocks high for all my mates coming round and that, coming round and watching footy and that, coming round and having a laugh and that, coming round and having a boozy bbq and that, as I am geet popular that beer stock was surely dished out and everyone had a mint time and that.

So aye, approaching 5 years now in London and still no mates and that

The world cup warchest has slowly diminished to the point that I needed to brew some more.
Stuck 120 pints of Wilkos Best Bitter in the fermenters yesterday. My old man swears by it so hopefully it will be a canny pint.

Anyone had any good successes recently?
The cheap Harvest Stout is lush after 6 month. Beautiful pint.

if you are dishing out free home brew I'm sure a few of us will come along and pretend to be your friend

There are a couple who do but they tend to not post in here that much as most of the talk is beneath them.
Most of us are planning to go all grain but with the initial cost and real life getting in the way it's on the back burner.
Once I get a job my first pay check is going on the equipment like.

HI BEST BUDDY!!!

My mate does all grain and has some amazing equipment. It's expensive and time consuming as far as I can tell.

I prefer paying 25-30p a pint so I'll stick to my kits.

I'm going to take on a homebrew project of building a kegerator in the next few weeks.

So you rack it somewhere else, leaving the crap behind then leave it to settle/clear then rack to bottles?

I'm looking forward to being able to join these folks in their ivory towers!

If you buy the manufactured equipment it does seem quite steep, I was looking at wort coolers yesterday (I'm aware I'm getting well ahead of myself! :-D) and they're over £60 where you could make one for about a tenner. The specialist pans with thermometers and taps built in are mental prices but you can make do with a lot less than that. I'm shit at DIY but I think I'll have a go at making my own mash tun and wort cooler which should just leave me needing to buy something to heat the water and a device for sparging so the cost shouldn't go too high. Looking around and you can get all the ingredients for a 40 pint brew for quite a bit less than the cost of a kit although for me I just like the idea of being able to customize completely rather than being restricted to whats in a kit.

I've only ever racked when doing wine, mate. While since I done a wine, but I'm sure that it is finings, de- gas it then rack it. Leave for a few days then bottle.

Never needed to with beer. Usually just dissolve priming sugar (normal sugar), let it cool. Stir into fermentation vessel with a gentle stir then bottle and leave the sediment on the bottom. If I was flush, I would buy sediment caps, but they are quite expensive.

Nee idea how many apples but will tell you next week. I'm going to be using all apple juice, might not even bother adding sugar tbh.

Just cracked open my strawberry & elderflower champagne 9.5%

Managed to get a decent fizz, despite using finings.
Bit of muck at the bottom, which spoils the last glass full a bit.

However, it's not bad.

All grain porter on the go now, making a much better job of it than I did with first ever go and enjoying it more too. Boiling away now, smells f***ing lovely already.

Just found out about the home brewing rule, when making home brew drink home brew...can't believe none of you twats mentioned that! Obviously I have no home brew ready so I'm just getting pissed off shop bought, thought that was better than nothing!

I'll probably bore you all with the pictures I've been taking at some point.

Hopefully it'll turn out well, lot of effort for 8 pints tho. Think I set the heater too high, checked this morning and the airlock is full of beer!
It'll just be a lively starter. When I put my scrumpy on, I will be leaving at least 2 litres of space in the demijohn.

All looks way too professional for my liking! ;)
Ssssssshhhhh man, we will have him drinking year old flat TC in no time!

Well I've just bottled up another batch. I think this one was a cooper's IPA. Not too sure about it to be honest. I may have left it in the barrel a bit too long.

I could do with maybe doing another golden ale, or something citrus-y when I come back from honeymoon before the weather turns.
Any suggestions?

Also, have you ever had a kit for something like an IPA or a lager etc and just chucked some other stuff to flavour it in to he barrel?
I was thinking about putting some kind of fruit based thing into the next one I do to see if I can actually make it taste different, but I'm not sure if that'll just ruin the whole thing.

I've done a cheap lager kit and instead of adding sugar for secondary, I added cherry sodastream, which turned out canny

Found a load of blackberries and apples yesterday, anyone got any recipes for scrumpy/cider or blackberry wine?

Apples are quite sour, but taste great. Not sure if they are good for cider? But fancy giving it a go, absolutely shit loads of apple trees I found while out with the dog.
