Do, it's a brilliant film. Shelly Winter (?) As the blowsey mother taking up with anyone for a bit love and affection is amazing. Deserved an Oscar

It's a beautiful film full of atmosphere and a brilliantly menacing Robert Mitchum. Such a shame it was negatively received at the time and Laughton never directed again.
