You'd have hoped that Sunderland and politics headlines were a thing of the past when Paolo Di Canio left, but it seems not. This one is far more PR friendly, though, as Black Cats fans have been named the most politically left-wing in the Premier League.




The data is collated by a YouGov profiling app, which polls fans and identifies apparently defining characteristics. In their own words, what they do is:

This app does not show the *typical* fan or customer. If it did, most groups would look very similar, and you wouldn't learn a lot about the specifics of particular thing.

It shows what is *particularly true* about a group. We compare the group to their natural 'comparison set' (for example, fans of Downton Abbey compared to anyone who has rated any TV shows) and see which of the thousands of datapoints most overscore in our target group. The Z score is a statistical measure of the strength of that overscoring.

For example, if something is only true of 1% of the overall population, but is true of 6% of our target group, it might score very highly (and shows you something interesting and true about that group). But it doesn't mean that it is true of all of them!

Another example: many of the football teams show a *female* character - this does not mean that most of the fans are female, but simply that compared to other football teams, there are *more* female fans than you would expect.

All seems a bit crazy and over the top and pretty needless to me, but whatever makes people happy really. That Sunderland fans are particularly left-wing from a political stand-point isn't an earth-shattering revelation given the Labour party's dominance in the region for decades.

What else does the app's finding say about Sunderland fans? Quite a lot really. You can go and have a look for yourself in detail by CLICKING HERE, but as a quick summary: Sunderland fans are engineers or manufacturers by trade, love a sherry trifle and pork pie combo, shop at ASDA, drives a Suzuki, and loves a bit of DIY while watching The Last Samurai.

I have no idea who these people are, as it sounds like no one I know, but there we go!

It's got Burnley as left wing but isn't their parliamentary seat occupied or was occupied by a bnp candidate - dubious this like

in the standard tonight was sayin survey said qpr fans like model making, whu fans' favourite food is pigeon and arsenal fans drive hondas wtf?!
 
VerY proud of that if true. Its in our roots...we joined the scots to fight the jordi royalists.
