"Here's the Red Arrows, doing the same thing they've done every year for the past 25 years. Ooooh, isn't it great"

"We have had people come down from as far as Alnwick, we have had people from York and people come for brunch from Derby because they had heard of us."
The seaside destination transformed into a trendy drinking and dining hub
Seaburn's coastline has undergone an impressive transformation in recent years and its buzzing hospitality scene is attracting visitors from across the UK and abroadwww.google.com
I travel to w bayDisagree strongly with this mind. The airshow is something unique that attracts people from a massive area. Take away stuff like it's just the same as most other towns on the Coast and not better than them either, places like Whitby blow it out the water, for a tourist.
No-one is going to travel far to Seaburn as there's nothing unique. Similar that most people from Sunderland won't travel to Whitley Bay for the same reasons.
It's great down there now and always busy on a weekend. Well done SCC.3 people is nowt, the airshow attracted thousands of people in one weekend, who if they liked it - might've returned. They won't be returning though, if they've never been.
Is that why 15 or so businesses including a hotel have established themselves there since the demise of the Airshow?3 people is nowt, the airshow attracted thousands of people in one weekend, who if they liked it - might've returned. They won't be returning though, if they've never been.

People from Sunderland won't be staying in hotels. City Centre was based on retail which is suffering UK wide. The seafront specialises in hospitality. A different offer. This is a different debate, most people in Seaburn, will be from Sunderland. There's been about 15 business shut in the city centre at the same time, including the Travelodge High Street West. People have just moved.

The Holiday Inn has opened to replace the Travelodge. There's been plenty of leisure sites closing in the centre aswell though including the cinema. There's a massive overlap.
Mind this is still a different debate, unsure what it's got to do with the airshow which sold out every hotel in the area and brought thousands of people from all over.
Airshow did little to benefit local businessesThe Holiday Inn has opened to replace the Travelodge.
The businesses on the seafront have opened since the Airshow stopped. Why was that? The Seaburn Inn opened since it ceased. They wouldn't operate at a loss if the trade wasn't there. The Airshow operated for only 3 days a year, if that due to the unreliability of the weather. The businesses on the seafront are there because they attract trade all year round, not just for 3 days in July. None of those were there during the time the Airshow was operating. A coincidence?
My brother in laws mate, who is a Mag who doesn't wear his Toon top everywhere he goes, comes to Roker with his wife a lot. He lives in Newcastle. The Holiday Inn has opened to replace the Travelodge.

I remember seeing a post from a local restaurant saying exactly thatAirshow did little to benefit local businesses

Yep it was invaded by the Kiss Me Quick stall holders.Airshow did little to benefit local businesses
Beat me to it, if anything it was a hindrance to local businessesYep it was invaded by the Kiss Me Quick stall holders.
I'm not really into planes,
But the Red Arrows are very popular and the local media always made a big deal over how many visitors Sunderland airshow attracted to the area.
What a huge boost to businesses new & old if it had continued.
What were the official reasons it was cancelled? I vaguely remember some utter bollocks about how stopping the planes would help save the planet but no idea if that was the main reason.
Mate is your head there just to stop you from drinking too much rainwater? Having a giggle the air show was ace
It’s a smashing place to visit nice walk along the sea frontit. There is precious few other reasons to visit Seaburn
