It also worth noting that "bank holiday Mondays" do not fall on the actual Christian festival days . They are the days that the Banks actully closed their doors serveral time each year in order to sort their book out. They chose the days to follow the Christian festivals . That's why the are termed "Bank Holidays"

No no no, the fact that people welcome a day off now and again validates the entire concept of religion and believing in the supernatural

It worth pointing out that no one has actually been offended by this. It's just that the ad agency have a no religion no politics policy. Which is fine.

However, I should point out that actually, I am offended by this. It's a paid for advert, from the Church of England telling people to "Just pray". Just pray. Nothing else. It's the least thing you can do. Literally, the f***ing least.

Why not an ad from the Church telling people to help others. Love thy neighbour, including the foreign ones. Help the sick. Don't covet material things. You know, those lovely Christian values I was taught at school. I'd be much happier if the church were paying money to tell people to do those things rather than tell them to do what amounts to the square root of fuck all.

If you don't like shows like Vines you must also not like tv shows such as question time, which is more or less the same format. Message boards like this give a soapbox to all kinds of shite but how far do you want to take censorship? Just allow opinions that tie in with yours maybe?
As for religious types knocking on your door trying to convert you. The one and only time anybody has knocked on my door was circa 1982 when some Jehovah's witnesses, with a projector and screen, asked me if they could come in and show me a movie. I politely declined and they went on their way.
So that's once in many a decade yet you seem to be fighting img them off with a shitty stick. I'm not calling you a liar, but....
As for the ad it's like any ad on tv or at the cinema, just ignore it if the product it's selling doesn't interest you. There we have it, simple advice for anyone.

I can't stand Question Time either to be honest. At least with a message board, I'm able to get in a reply as opposed to listen to someone prattle on.

I've lived in my house 4 years and I think I've probably had 1 a year. I get more chuggers to be honest.
I also clearly don't live in the same area as you so you can take your "I'm not calling you a liar, but..." and put it back in it's condescending little box and fuck off
Maybe I need one of those "Polite Notice" notices.

That's the point. It's not a product. You can't buy it. Yes, I can ignore or snort derisively at the next "Cool Water" advert that comes on, but when it's the religious equivalent of a party political broadcast, I draw the line.

Maybe it's isn't meant to achieve anything other than to give people a minute of reflection in the run up to the Christmas holidays.

That's all well and good, but I still say it's out of place.
Oddly enough I probably wouldn't object if it was on TV, but at least then I'd have the option to turn it over if I didn't want to watch it.

I wish they had run the ad, but insisted on the disclaimer that has to be put on advertising for psychic shows, that it's not real and is for entertainment purposes only.

Honestly, that wasn't worth noting

I'm all for it being advertised. Then we could complain about them on the Advertising Standards Authority rules and they'd have to admit that prayer doesn't work, it's not possible to turn water into wine and there is no such thing as a magic invisible being watching over us.

Snip and indeed Snap.

Because praying will help you to see what you should do, even if you didn't think anyone was listening it can help you take positive action, I dunno why people such as yourself think people pray then sit at home with their finger up their arse.

Also I doubt you're actually offended, you just don't agree with the method of the advice given.

Not really. If you are mad enough to have voices inside your head telling you that someone is listening to your 'prayers' then those same voices in your head are probably sending out a warped perspective of reality.

Fair enough and as I said at the beginning, I'm not bothered either way - the company's decision as far as I'm concerned. I was just answering your question about what it was 'meant to achieve'.

And a very good response it was too. Seriously, I took that on board.

I thought praying was asking a higher power for help. Meditation is contemplating a problem.

They might have well said "Just brainstorm" ; it'll provide more solutions than asking a deity for help to problems.

I see what you did there.

After I submitted that post I had a more serious think.

Why not teach kids proper analytical and logical problem solving skills instead of indoctrinating them to beg to a pretend deity?

E.g. If you pray to someone to ask for ideas for a car purchase then a simple matrix of requirements and a weighted score for each would provide a more meaningful outcome.

Thing is you would be surprised how many folk have that attitude when things are all and well, but then suddenly change their views when life turns really bad and you are given the news that everyone dreads to hear from the doctor.... or you are lying on your death bed breathing the last few gulps of air.
Que the bravado of I wouldn't give a shit blah blah
The real issue here is the fact that as a nation we are being gradually worn away by the constant give away of some of our core values/beliefs/traditions..call it what you want by the soft arsed twats who haven't got what it takes to say sod off if you don't like it.
10 yrs ago the agency would of took the money and played it.
