plumbers advice

The motor may have given up, they don't last forever, or the valve may have seized. They usually have a manual lever to open the valve if the motor is gone (small level of the front of the image above).

If the valve itself has seized then you're probably going to need a plumber.
The manual lever is the metal bit in the photo. You just lift it up and move it across if it's knackered.
 
You'll see a little cog that the motor moves it with, it just rocks the main cog from side to side Flathead and force it the opposite way you should be able to see what I mean.
Sensible heed on now.

I've got an oil boiler, but I would imagine the valves and controls work the same way?

Had the same issue. My plumber simply replaced that particular valve and it's been fine since. 👍
 
well fuck me i think i've fixed it. whoever invented wd40 should have been knighted if they weren't. no hammer required.

I think it's more the shite inside that eventually makes it too difficult for the motor to move, if you do it manually a few times it frees up, as you've found.
