Peter Criss was the original drummer. Left officially in 1980 but was on his way out in reality before that. They used Anton Fig for much of the Dynasty and Unmasked albums Eric Carr joined at that point and recorded Music From The Elder as his first album but made his mark on the follow up Creatures of the Night.

He did indeed die on the same day as Mercury but that passed the mainstream press by. Was a really nice bloke by all accounts and was only 41 when he died.
