Took me ages before I figured out you could do that, I've now got Microsoft Security essentials and it's better and free

Safe mode with networking > download, install and update malwarebytes > full scan.

Before you start uninstalling the operating system.

But aye, IE is shit.

I did say 'etc' meaning ' after trying all the above' - but reinstalling the OS isn't that big a deal.
