Do you celebrate Christmas?

Always seem to be some niggly, little things go wrong around this time of year, whether its health issues or something like this years niggles which are the sound going off on the tv on every channel but BBC One and the vacuum cleaner suddenly deciding it can't be bothered to pick much up.
After years of experiences I'm fully expecting something to decide "that's it" around now, car/vac/electicals.
Agree with most of that, but expectations need to be tempered.
It can still be a wonderful time for children, even if they dont get that dream gift.
I'm still upset about getting a rocket station instead of a bike around '68. Don't get me wrong the rocket stn was great apart from putting holes in the ceiling when I launched them.

Exactly so things were different when you were a kid? It was more probable that you just looked at life different. I bet your parents still thought it was commercial than when they were kids and so on.
I can remember Christmases going back to the 60s and it was no different to today. People said back then it was too commercial now compared to when they were kids. My mother used to say, we'd get a bag of nuts and an orange or two. A bag of ashes if you'd been naughty.
Social media has been mentioned on this thread, maybe that's where the problem is. I don't do social media so don't have the problem of the present braggers. Actually I'm not sure how that is a problem just don't read that stuff.
What has changed though is how long Christmas now lasts. It starts in August and there will still be left over Christmas paraphernalia in the shops in February. When I was a kid Christmas was a December event. I'm only now giving it any real thoughts. I've done me avatar and now need a present for the wife. I'll get that this week and that's the stress over for me. :)

Used to love it until about 10 years ago and now don't really enjoy it at all.

I remember one year just before visitors were due for new year the heating packed up and the oven door catch failed!!! Managed to resolve both but it was a close run thing and bloody stressful!!!

Dickens references the commercialisation in Christmas Carol!!! Its mental now though. This cost of living crisis has pushed so many people back down the wealth ladder (just how the Torys like it!!). Did Christmas shop today at Asda over £300. That is basically 6 days of food we aren't even at home for Xmas dinner.

That's more the stupid cost of things these days. Not so much whether Christmas is more commercialised today.
As someone who was brought up by a single mother I know what having nowt is like. Christmas should be about being with family, having a good time, a break from work and exchanging gifts. They don't have to be expensive gifts though. I really do feel for parents, especially single parents, who can't afford today's inflated prices. The pressure on them to spend what they don't have at this time of year must be shocking.

Yes I agree there like on the length and ferociousness that it gets thrown at us from late September. But I suppose back then it was Xmas clubs and hampers, butchers books etc. like you say it’s more geared up to do everything in the last fortnight nowadays but starts getting flogged earlier.
I mean who buys a sofa 6 weeks before Christmas.

Totally Agree. All about time together with Family.

I enjoyed the traditional nuts & tangerines in my festive stocking, nowadays it would be something a damned sight more expensive or whoever received it would create hell. A 60s Christmas that I grew up in wouldn't go down well today for some.

Same as always. On Christmas Eve I open my new pjs. We have used the same label since I was like 4. I wake up on Christmas morning and open the presents and just spend the day in the house. I’m not working luckily on Christmas Eve as it falls on a Sunday and I contractually don’t work then and ASDA is closed Christmas Day (much to the annoyance of customers who are right now stockpiling in case the worst happens) but I am working Boxing Day.

Mrs loves Christmas so much, it is infectious. Really look forward to it now.
14 coming to us this year.
Daughter and her husband been trying for a family for years. It was going to be a really special one this year as she fell pregnant, but she miscarried yesterday.
Not quite sure how high everyones spirits are going to be after that tbh.😪
Sorry to hear that Marra, thoughts are with you all.

My Mrs sounds the same as yours, she absolutely loves it, when i first met her i thought she was bat shit crazy when Christmas came round 🤣. But, it was infectious as you say, we love it, the spirit, the feeling of it, the family flock home for it and we all lap it up. It’s about the love of the season and each other for us, can’t bloody wait until the kids get here on Saturday.
Not at about money in any way, it the small things that are the best, she’s upstairs now doing god knows what secret preparations for the weekend, so glad she brought that all with her, wouldn’t be without it now.

I just never used to think of Christmas as anything special.
Then I met her. Thowt she was f***ing nuts tbh, but the family thing, and traditions etc. I'm 100% in now. Love it.
Thank you for your thoughts anarl marra.

We'll look after her. Still our little girl, even though she's 40. It never stops.❤
