Joining a Union - worth it?

We had redundancies a few year back and the useless twats were nowhere to be seen. I had a mate who was sacked and it was a given that he would get his job back when it went to a tribunal BUT, the useless twats never turned up to defend his case and he was sacked. I could go on and on. They simply have no pull or power now.

True dat
tis true that bit, and its the part of union membership that im still not convinced by

I stopped paying into a union about 8 years ago after an issue I had with an employer, the union did very little to help and in fact I think it made the problem worse, I've spoke to loads of people who seem to have had the same experience as me..now I'm on the out side looking in, it looks like the union bosses are the ones who are driving around in big cars and eat out on expenses paid for by the workers.

What union bosses do you know like mate?

Also being a union boss is a well paid job. What's wrong with having a nice car and eating at a nice restaurant?

I stopped paying in about eight years before I left my employer eight years ago or so.
I found I could handle the employers all by myself while the union people were a pushover.

Me taxes help pay for well paid cival servants lifestyles? Is there any real difference?

Being the boss of a union is a well paid job. If you rose through the ranks at your place and got pay rises I take it you would still lifestyle of a bottom paid worker as a sign of solidarity?

Just because it's a well paid job doesn't mean its morally right does it ? these are the same people who are getting a 11% pay rise while others get nowt..do me a favour

No matter what organisation it is, union, bank, power company etc etc those at the top are going to earn more money and lead a richer lifestyle than those at the bottom of the organisation

I really don't see your point. Are you expecting the boss of a multi million pound union to be earning what a shop floor worker does?

Being in a Union is about more than getting help when you need it. It's also about being a collective and pushing for the right things for the right people.

Unions often have to approve changes to terms and conditions for all workers in a business. In my last employer, they had to consult the unions before making changes to job profiles, and thus ensuring that the employer didn't just change the profiles, then tell people they weren't performing to the new standard and sack everyone.

I've thankfully never had to use a union, but I have as an employer seen first hand the good they do bring, even if they aren't as powerful as they used to be. I have been in a union since my first working day and will continue to be, even if I personally don't need them, I think others less fortunate than me, as well as the collective will benefit from them.

/tinhaton As a socialist, I think it's hypocritical to not be in one. /tinhatoff

At no point did I say that the top bosses should be earning the same as a floor worker that is just plain stupid ? however giving themselves 11% pay rise while others get a freeze is just wrong. Running a Trade union isn't like running a bank or private sector business or for that matter working in the statutory sector. "I think you need to do some homework on the history of trade unions" and finally you do seem to have a very Tories eye view on things so thats where I'll get off

Enjoy your "loads of Money" life style I'm sure you'll have earn it

Ask not what your Union can do for you but what you can do for your Union.
Or summat like that.;)
I'm tired of having this conversation/argument on here. You should definitely join a union in my view. I've seen it from both sides of the fence, management and worker and you'd be mad not to.
Personal choice, join if you want but if you wait till you get into bother and think of joining a union then, well quite frankly you can fuck off.
*my potty mouthed rant is not aimed at @HellsBells

Absolutely. I have found them of particular importance when dealing with some members of the senior leadership.

Mind on a national level I've found them to be totally useless.
