UK ordered to pay £1.7bn more to EU

Because we couldn't afford to buy as much (e.g. CAP food) given the drop in our exports?

Have you thought this through mate?

There wouldn't be tariffs both ways if the EU decided to go down that route? We import more than we export. Their economies are in the shit, can they take the hit? Would Mr BMW not be straight on the blower to Merkel going potty that one of their largest markets has shrunk? We'd also be able to then negotiate agreements with the rest of the world. Car sales from Britain for example are growing to the rest of the world but declining to Europe already.

The cynic in me thinks its a ploy for Cameron to go there play the hard man and come back with a victory, so people think we have the power to influence things in EU.
The cynic in me notes that this is an unexpected, pay immediately demand from the Commission.

Whose new leader was only recently (unilaterally and unsuccessfully) opposed by Cameron.

Which is timed to do as much damage to Cameron as possible, re. the previous and forthcoming by-elections featuring Tory defectors to UKIP.

Thereby favouring the return of Labour at the forthcoming general election. The only actually electable party that isn't promising a referendum on EU membership.

Laughable. f***ing hell at a time when everyone knows the UK would like a referemdum the EU really arent helping themselves are they? Clearly they just dont get it or like the results of referendums arent bothered.
Their almost comical insular inability to read a situation or appreciate anything outside of the EU bubble always reminds me of Sepp Blatter and his cronies. It's the Mike Ashley formula of pouring petrol on the flames.

Its a disgrace. you know for a fact that if the shoe was one the other foot and france was asked to pay 100s of millions in rebate to us they wouldnt.

(except that time they did)

That's Democracy EU style for you.

They penalise success and reward failure.

Just one of the reasons why the whole of the EU is sliding ever faster down the plug hole and being left for dead by rapidly emerging more efficient economies

Maybe it's time to threaten to form an alternative EU with Putin. He can annex a few starting members, give us cheap energy, and provide a military alliance that knows which way up its arse is. He doesn't know the meaning of beaurocracy.

Better the psycho you know, and all that.

Tell them to piss off and get out of it

I think that day is drawing ever closer, and we have the idiots in the EU who believe themselves to be untouchable for that. They'll have a financial hole of at least £9 billion to fill once we've gone. No wonder they want us to stay, their corrupt cabal will hopefully crumble once we've gone.

A special mention should also go to Nigel Farage. I've just watched his interview on the BBC, and he has to be commended for keeping a straight face throughout. He must be doing cartwheels in his head.

and the only party that will lick the Brussels boots and continue to subsidise their gravy train with money we can I'll afford to lose.

 Will have to catch that tonight.

so when im reliably informed by the Champagne socialists on this forum that polls say a majority of people in this country want to stay in europe - where are they all on the board!? surely the majority of posters here as a percentage of the general population should be pro europe - but all im getting is a major anti europe feeling. Oh hang on is the poll wrong then?????

I think the last Euro elections, and the most recent by-elections have shown what we think of Europe.

He wouldnt be consistant if the government said the the 1.7 billion means he got two quid a week less on his benefits

Already losing something like 60 quid a week, another 2 wont make much difference.

I'd rather that 'those not doing so well', would man the fuck up and do what they're morally obliged to do.

So when we get a rebate from them you would turn it down?

I think it's well worth it. Sooner we have a federal europe and get shot of this little englander mentality the better.

BBC have a interesting article about why we are being asked to pay this.
According to them, Cameron and co reported that the country was doing good, I seem to recall the coalition made a big deal out of how the economy has improved.
Well, now that they are being asked to shell out (due to that) they are suddenly saying that its not really doing well, its just that they have changed acountancy methods.
One such change is including illegal activities, such as the money made from prostition in the economy figures.

Why has it been asked for so much more?
The UK, in common with most other countries, has been making big changes to its methodology for measuring the size of its economy this year.
As a result of this, it has worked out the value of some things, such as illegal activities, which it should have been including in the national accounts for some time.
and
The UK has just started including the money made from prostitution as part of the size of its economy - it's a relatively small amount of money but it's a good example.

So camerons recovery sounds more like a con that is based on guesses about how much money prostitutes make (and I would imagine other illegal activities such as drug dealing etc) rather than anything they have done.
Now that the accountancy trick has backfired, people might see them for what they are - liars who do not uphold agreemments or follow the law when it is not in their favour.

It should be paid up and people should stop whinging. I'm looking forward to Cameron playing the outraged strong leader role with all his bluster for the domestic media and audience just before Europe tell him shut the fuck up, pay up and stop moaning before he slinks away saying "i told them", after of course paying what is rightly due.
The outrage from the anti EU'ers on here is funny to watch as they stomp and jerk their knees about having to actually honour the agreements Britain has. This outrage wasn't very evident when Britain PLC was banking their EU rebates.
