Frankly wasn't that impressed with Daveed. Seemed a bit lightweight and can't see him as President.

But that's really irrelevant as surely the whole bloody house of cards has to come down anyway - we have to re-start with a much different organisation - and an accountable organisation, not a bloody fiefdom!

 he never wanted to be president

The Swiss government needs to step in and say 'if you're an international organisation which wants to be based here, and take advantages of all that Swiss domicile offers including low corporation tax, you have to abide by the following governance standards. Otherwise fuck off.'
Hasnt the law changed over there recently which has allowed these arrests? Hopefully a sign the Swiss Government has had enough

So apparently that panorama journalist handed the FBI some evidence back in 2010 and they've been building their case since then!

Shameful mind how we (and plenty of other countries) treat Blatter as a head of state, inviting him to Downing St., giving him a personal meeting with Cameron. No wonder he thinks he's untouchable.

Its also interesting that the USA who are often castigated by football fans (mainly over their constant use of the term 'soccer' which is actually a British word) may be the ones to finally put an end to FIFA's corruption. There is a certain irony here.

I'm not an expert in Swiss law or public life but my perception is that a lot of what was acceptable there say 40 years ago, e.g. banking secrecy, is no longer acceptable.

All developed nations need to sign an accord saying they will only accept international organisations domiciling on their territories if they sign up to commonly agreed governance standards. If the FIFAs of this world then want to fuck off to some dodge pot country, the signatories should pull their international teams from their competitions.

This is sport's Lehman Brothers moment. There must be coordinated action by governments (and football won't sort it, it's going to take governments) so that it never happens again.

Would this be a good time for the big five or six European associations to propose an alternative global federation?

Just pull out now and if England, Germany, France, Spain and Italy could agree and get the USA, Brazil and Argentina to agree, then its game over for FIFA as those nations have dominated the world cup and pull in most of the sponsorship and TV rights.

Get the Chinese and the Japanese on board as well and it's a done deal.

I keep saying this but don't bank on any of those, apart from England and the USA, being footballing countries prepared to exhibit the zeal to push for change. They haven't shown it so far.

doesn't that mean they just didn't bribe enough people if they came second, the least corrupt ones are probably the ones who came last

Yeah.

That would be us then:)

Still struggle with the use of "soccer"

Coined on the playing fields of English private schools in the same was 'rugger' was.

The word 'soccer' is as English as can be and is an abbreviation of the word 'association' and was used to differentiate football as we now know it from Rugby, which was then also known as 'football'.

Just seen you online @The Hunter and while I am of course not expecting you to give any revelations to today's (well, revelations!) - what are the general 'inside feelings' from the English media to today's news? I'm sure the media wheel is in full flow with this? Does it sound like the 'beginning of things' like the US authorities are alluding to?

Andrew Jennings on Australian radio this morning (afternoon your time)

You'll get a list of audio grabs, click on the Andrew Jennings - FIFA corruption item for a listen.

In between fits of laughter he mentions how the FBI contacted him and he's been helping them out since... 6 years' worth!

Looks like they are going after the pirate of the caribbean as well, concacaf ex-president jack warner... arguably the rankest of the fifa corrupt...

Breaking: Trinidad attorney general issues provisional arrest warrant for Jack Warner + he will face extradition proceedings to USA

"There are some people here who think they are more pious than thou. If you're pious, open a church, friends. Our business is our business."

Alleged statement from former Concacaf president Jack Warner

Well yes Jack - your business, and the business of those you stole from.

Warner, who stood down from all soccer posts in 2011, said in a statement that he was innocent of any charges.

"I have been afforded no due process and I have not even been questioned in this matter," he said in the statement. "I have walked away from the politics of world football to immerse myself in the improvement of lives in this country where I shall, God willing, die."

Poor Jack is now calling God... something tells me he'll get the answering machine.

UEFA shows FIFA the red card

Today's events are a disaster for FIFA and tarnish the image of football as a whole.

UEFA is deeply shocked and saddened by them.

These events show, once again, that corruption is deeply rooted in FIFA's culture.

There is a need for the whole of FIFA to be "rebooted" and for a real reform to be carried out.

The upcoming FIFA Congress risks to turn into a farce and therefore the European associations will have to consider carefully if they should even attend this Congress and caution a system, which, if it is not stopped, will ultimately kill football.

The UEFA member associations are meeting tomorrow ahead of the FIFA Congress. At that point, the European associations will decide on what further steps need to be taken to protect the game of football.

In the meantime, the members of the UEFA Executive Committee are convinced that there is a strong need for a change to the leadership of this FIFA and strongly believe that the FIFA Congress should be postponed, with new FIFA presidential elections to be organised within the next six months.

They're jumping off the sinking ship...

Bye bye Sepp

The U.S. might not play the game on the field that well. But they act when Europe fucks about knowing what has been gong on for years. Nowt better than some foreign big wig to toss in the can. Put Blatter in with the 300 pounder
