I don't know what you mean by top... if you mean good enough to play for a top 4 club, I don't think we had many. (Henderson when he played for us wasn't at that level). If you mean good enough to play for a team of Everton's level regularly..... maybe the likes of Schwarz would get a mention there.

Sadly, this is the correct answer. Pretty much everyone else had their best days elsewhere and mostly before they came to Sunderland. Shack on the other hand was described as 'possibly the greatest player in the world today' in an annual while he was still playing for Sunderland. I know this because I have a copy of it in my loft.
