How much does the Fulham game mean to you?

Agreed mate, I'd prefer to win a cup than stay in the Premier League, yet a cup match doesn't seem as important until later as they all count for nowt unless you win or at least get to Wembley. I think I've been conditioned by the media, the cup used to seem so special, maybe it's because we were shit then and didn't play the big boys every week.

Conditioned by the media? Maybe it is just an inherited thing. Growing up as a fan of a particular team you learn by instinct that a win in a cup is a big deal. I learned that way. That is how I became a Sunderland fan. I saw a Sunderland town center (as it was known at the time since Sunderland was not a city) bedecked in red and white for the 1992 FA Cup Final. Everyone was involved. I realized it was something very important. So when we lost 2-0 I was gutted. Just as I was in 1985 watching the Milk Cup Final. But I was too young in 1985 to be properly upset. I was only 9. But I was 16 in 1992. I was fully aware of what it meant to lose in a cup final. I decided then that I would support Sunderland. Without the 1992 FA Cup Final I could have easily chosen to support Newcastle as it is the only other team in my part of the region. The others are small teams in Northumberland, Teeside or County Durham.

But I agree totally about the first bit. You have 38 games to stay up. But as a team in the top two leagues you have 5 to win a major cup. But progression in the League Cup is worse than in the FA Cup as the smaller PL and Championship teams have already played a round by the time the top clubs enter. An already super strong club capable of playing many more games playing a round less than teams that don't have the quality to last longer than top clubs doesn't seem right. They should be made to play more. That said the importance is greater. Less games to achieve it in.

Who youd expect to face in the next round...
Man utd
Swansea (maybe Blackburn like)
City
Cardiff or Reading.
WBA or maybe Brum

Spurs
Preston
Southampton

Chelsea
Derby
Liverpool
West Ham
Villa (maybe Bournemouth)
Stoke.

If we can keep this mental run of being drawn at home up (10 of last 11 draws isn't it?), and despite 1 win in the league at our place, Id fancy our chances at the Sol against the 8 opponents above, the other 8 would be quite a scrap.

Away from home all of these are different prospects altogether, Id write off say Swansea or Southampton away, maybe replays if were solid again.

Need to avoid the big guns then its the last 8, a shoot out for a game down Wembley again, again, preferably at home, we`d more than likely have to pull off a shock like last years league cup quarters/semis. Were capable.

Given how badly negative we play all of them will be tough surely.

Think it's a myth that people don't care about the cup anymore. It might have become less relevant to the top clubs now everything is driven by money but to sides outside the top division or two it is still massive, both financially and glory wise.

I think most people care, it's just people don't tend to take as much of an interest until they can smell Wembley, don't get me wrong, I'd be there tomorrow if I could, but I wouldn't be totally gutted if we lost, as much as I'd rather win the cup than even be in the Premier League, I'd take a win against Burnley over tomorrow given a straight choice.

Yes but can I remind you Villa have scored 11 league goals this season, WBA and Palace have won 5 games from 22 played etc.

Im not saying we`re Real Madrid but were capable of beating the bold sides at home.

Its almost as painful going out to say Chelsea or City than Rochdale due to the fact that their owners/manager/players and fans don't see the competition as a big deal.

Man utd definitely should have been hoyed out for 5 years when they failed to enter. That was maybe the start of the rot. Bet the feckers are interested now theyre unlikely to win owt else.

A lot to me, progressing in the cups, round per round is for me as important as it gets.
We have a cup match tomorrow and if you win youre through and thats all we should be thinking.
No giving this fucker a game or trying this - you play your strongest team to win.

This - weve found out the hard way we simply don't have the strength to do this. Look how our strongest side huffed n puffed v Leeds.

Winning means my first drink after the match can be a pint rather than a treble vod.

Also likely to spoil valentines day for the wench.

Some strange comments on this thread, mind.
Some truths:
  1. I want us to play strong teams in both games
  2. We should be able to win both games
  3. A cup run would be most welcome
But the underlying question is clear "IF you had to choose between beating Fulham and beating Burnley (yes, I know you don't have to in real life.....durrrr!), which would you choose?
My answer is beat Burnley as I want us to progress in the Prem and I hope one day we will.

The FA Cup is the biggest trophy SAFC can ever win. Therefore it is the biggest game of the season so far by a mile.

Some of the comments from the Children of the Premier League on here makes me wonder why they support SAFC at all. We won't ever win the league - so they are basically saying that all they want from supporting SAFC is to avoid relegation every season. I can only assume they have swallowed the Premier League hype.

I pity them.

I'd like to win and progress to the next round- but if we lost I wouldn't be too bothered. I'd rather win next week against Burnley tbh.

Maybe because i'm younger and don't have as much feeling for the FA Cup as other people.

MODS: Ban this cretin forthwith. He is obviously on day release and should not be left unsupervised near a computer/laptop/phone

I'm a cretin for recognising that the PL is a complete waste of time for the majority of clubs in it?

It is not a fair competition, it has been ruined by Sky and money - for that reason I would definitely take relegation to win the FA Cup, 100%

Bollox that, mind. I want to watch us to play week-in, week-out like Southampton do now (they will never win the Prem either). If we get the odd cup thrown in - MINT!

I'm owlde, but I agree with you. Maybe because I'm an exile?
