Why do people get tattoos?

I don't like tattoos and I haven't got any - but if you want one then it's nowt to do with me.

I had a conversation with a bloke, however, who debated with me that having tattoos indicated that the 'wearer' was 'creative' and/or 'artistic'. My response was that, unless they were applied or designed by the wearer, they were merely the canvas, rather than the artist and, as such, he was talking bollocks.

OK. On a recent episode of "Don't tell the bride" a quite attractive woman had a series of tattoos on her arm and wore a wedding dress to show them off.

It's obviously a personal choice and her happiness was paramount but I wonder if she will feel differently in 10, 20, 30 years time when fashions have changed.

Cheers.

In 10,20,30 years time the older generation it'll be more popular to have a tattoo than not, most people I know/see have tattoos so what's the issue?

And surely if it's my body I don't know why it bothers other people?

You have quite thin arms do you not? It'll look like someone's attacked you with a pack of crayolas.
Why don't you get one of these

First, they're not that small and most lasses arms are

Secondly, it's not going to have any colour in it

You've spelt 'scrattoos' wrang marra.

Billy Connolly always says that people with tattoo's are the least 'beige' people you'll ever meet. I think the opposite is true.

I'm honestly not criticising or denying anybody the right to decorate their body. It's more a case of wondering why people have them and whether they consider the after effects.

I just thought it was a bit sad that an attractive bride had a massive tattoo on one arm that was visible in her wedding photos. It's not right for me (even though I'd look lush in a wedding gown), but it obviously is for her.

The problem you may face with fashions changing on what seems to be a 20 year-ish cycle is that the younguns will be anti-tattoos and will look for crusty old women to make fun of! "Look at that old bird in the corner of the pub lads, she must be a convict or a fish-wife!". ;)

I just gave in with the 2nd one tbh. Got hannah tattooed when i was younger (about 19) and pissed. Met Kate 18 months ago and she hated the hannah tattoo (used to bite it and scratch it and stuff). Wanted a Sunderland badge but couldnt get it (apparently the black on the original would show through) so my lass said that if i loved her as much as my ex i should get her name. I was enjoying the sex so i just said okay.

Need to stay with her now because this one is bigger and cant really be covered. Bit of a risk getting it 2 months into the relationship really but we've got a bairn together now and we're quite settled so fingers crossed!
 You's are doomed now quite frankly marra. It's over.

Well yes, most lasses arms are, which is also runs risk of them looking a bit odd

Secondly I'm sure you can get black and white ones of black and skin, too.
To be fair, it's your body but I can't really see why you' want to do it, when you can see what it'll look like in years to come.

Also, and this is a side issue, but it applies to everyone, if you have a tattoo you can't be a blood donor for about 6 months, which is a real shame.
And I'm mainly saying that because I can't donate blood but I would if I could.

Fair play.

Things might change but being honest if it doesnt work with this lass (who ive moved to sunderland for etc) i currently dont think id even want another lass so it shouldnt ever be an issue. Id want sex so would fool around etc but a relationship is a lot of effort and a lot of giving and compromise and stuff. Its fine with this lass but if we split up i think id just focus on being a good dad to my son and would spend my spare time and money on going to the matches, traveling when i can and generally enjoying myself. Could do without the stress of another missus!

Bothers us?

I think it's class for us non-drawn on types to look on and laugh at. I'm all for it.

I have 2, don't see the problem with them tbh. But I agree with a previous post, I'm not so keen on these generic ones people have that mean fuck all (Tribal ones, pictures of a dove (because it symbolises freedom apparently...)). Be creative, have something that means something to you not something that your best mate has. Afterall, you'll have it until your rotting in the ground.

Class seen in Harry Enfield/Fast Show.

Why did you have the 'INDIVIDUAL' tattoo on your forehead - "Cos my mate has got one".

I don't think you are correct. Clearly in the last few years tattoos have become fashionable. The nature of fashions is that they come and go. I would think there will be a generation come along for whom Tatts are seen as passé or unfashionable. I may, of course, be completely wrong.

I said that and now I can't wait to get the colour in it. The brighter the better IMO.
